One of Egypt’s leading electrification and automation companies, ABB in Egypt has announced plans to transform its factories into eco-friendly industrial facilities powered by clean energy. Through a strategic partnership with the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), the company will support efforts to reduce carbon emissions and expand the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions across its industrial facilities.
The first milestone of this partnership is the implementation of an integrated solar energy project covering the rooftops of several different factories within the company’s complex, making it one of the largest distributed solar energy projects across the industrial sector in Egypt.
With a total installed capacity of 3.3 MW, the project is expected to generate approximately 5.05 GWh of clean electricity annually, reducing around 2,846 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year; the equivalent of avoiding the consumption of more than 1.22 million liters of fuel annually. The project is scheduled to be connected to the national electricity grid in 2027 and is designed with an operational lifespan of 30 years. This project directly supports the “Shams Al-Sinaa” Initiative’s target of deploying up to 1,000 MW of rooftop solar systems across industrial facilities nationwide.
Commenting on the partnership, Ahmed Hammad, Chairman of ABB in Egypt, said: “”This project is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to leading Egypt’s sustainable industrial transformation. The future of industry is built on clean energy, and we continue to invest in the latest electrification, automation, and digital technologies to help industries become leaner and cleaner, boosting their competitiveness while reducing their carbon footprint. Our partnership with RCREEE reflects a shared vision of accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy and advancing the national objectives of the ‘Shams Al-Sinaa’ Initiative.”
Dr. Abdullah Kassem, Board Member & Electrification Commercial Lead at ABB in Egypt, added: “We are proud that this project serves as a practical model for leveraging smart electrification and renewable energy solutions to improve industrial energy efficiency and enhance the reliability of power supply, while directly reducing operational costs. Beyond being one of the largest rooftop solar projects in Egypt’s industrial sector, it serves as a living platform for deploying advanced technologies that maximize energy utilization. This achievement reflects our genuine commitment to reducing our carbon footprint by transitioning 70% of our operational energy consumption to solar power by 2027. It also supports ABB’s global target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2050.”
In this context, Dr. Maged Mahmoud, Acting Executive Director of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), stated: “This partnership represents a practical model of collaboration between regional institutions and the private sector to accelerate the transition toward a low-emission industrial sector. At RCREEE, we believe that achieving sustainability goals requires aligning the efforts of all stakeholders, sharing expertise and best practices, and expanding the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions. These efforts will enhance the competitiveness of the industrial sector and support the achievement of sustainable development goals in Egypt and across the Arab region.”
It is worth noting that the company has been a trusted partner in the Egyptian market for more than a century. Over the decades, ABB in Egypt has played a pivotal role in supporting the country’s industrial and infrastructure development, contributing to landmark national projects including the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Toshka Agricultural Development Project, and the Bahr El Baqar Water Treatment Plant. Today, ABB in Egypt continues to deliver advanced technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and sustainability for a wide range of industries across Egypt.
